The team

Kashif Khan is completing his PhD in Cardiac Surgery at McGill University. His has two main research focuses: 1) novel therapies for cardiac regeneration after a myocardial infarction and 2)  mechanisms that lead to coronary artery disease. With over 7 years of experience in scientific research and 2 years in running clinical studies, Kashif has published 14 peer-reviewed articles and has taken on several entrepreneurial ventures in the past. His drive and ambition to make clinical impact awarded him the Vanier Scholarship in 2019, a prestigious national scholarship which recognizes academic excellence, research potential and leadership. He is also an alumnus of the McGill Surgical Innovation program, FRQS/D3 Scientific Entrepreneurship course, and is currently part of NextAI.

Dr. Karina Gasbarrino, Co-founder and Chief Operations Officer

Dr. Karina Gasbarrino completed her PhD in Vascular Medicine at McGill University in May 2019. She has over 8 years of experience working with patients afflicted by atherosclerosis, ample expertise in developing and managing a large population-based human specimen biobank, and extensive knowledge in stroke research and vascular biology and pathology. Her current research program focuses on 1) unravelling novel pathways underlying the atherosclerotic process, as well as 2) identifying early predictive markers and therapeutic targets of plaque instability. She constantly seeks to integrate new techniques and tools in her research activities, in order to improve the current paradigm of screening, monitoring, and treating men and women with atherosclerotic disease. She was recently awarded the Women’s Entrepreneurship Scholarship to take part in the ‘Life Sciences Entrepreneurship Development Program’ 2020 cohort, a program created in collaboration with Montréal InVivo, Université de Montréal, and Concordia University.

Dr. Stella Daskalopoulou, Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Stella S. Daskalopoulou is the Director of the Vascular Health Unit at the MUHC (including a Wet-bench Lab and an Imaging Lab), and the Principle Investigator of PLAKK. Over the past 20 years she has been working in unravelling novel pathways underlying atherosclerotic plaque instability as well as incorporating imaging modalities to improve the characterization of plaques non-invasively. In this context, over the past eleven years she has been developing a large prospective human specimen biobank that consists of blood samples, plaque specimens, and clinical information obtained from patients with atherosclerosis. To date, hundreds of human plaque specimens have been collected that have been used in the creation of our AI platform.
